Touch Screens

Horizon offers integrated touchscreens as user interfaces to all NEC monitors listed. Horizon delivers ideal touchscreen solutions to markets such as digital signage, retail, entertainment, hospitality, medical, industrial, transportation, and education. Technologies include surface accoustic wave, resistive, capacitive, optical, and infrared.

Capacitive touchscreens use a glass panel with a conductive thin film on the surface. Capacitive sensors can either be touched with a bare finger or with a conductive device (soft stylus). Capacitive touchscreens are not affected by outside elements and have high clarity.

Resistive touchscreens are coated with electrically conductive and resistive layers that cause a change in the electrical current which is registered as a touch event and sent to the controller for processing. Resistive touchscreens are generally more affordable but offer only 75% clarity (premium films and glass finishes allow transmissivity to approach 85%). Although the layer can be damaged by sharp objects, resistive touchscreens are not affected by outside elements such as dust or water.

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAWs) touchscreens use ultrasonic waves that pass over the touch screen panel. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This change in the ultrasonic waves registers the position of the touch event and sends this information to the controller for processing. Contaminants on the surface can interfere with the functionality of the touchscreen. SAW touchscreens offer the highest clarity and one time calibration.

Infrared touchscreens utilize an array of vertical and horizontal IR sensors that detect interruption of a modulated light beam near the surface of the screen.  IR touch screens have very durable surfaces and are used in many industrial and military applications.

Optical technology uses two or more image sensors placed around the edges of the screen that detect touch.  Like infrared, these touch screens can be made very large and are very durable. With this unique technology the touch actually registers just before the physical touch on the screen. This technology is growing in popularity, due to its scalability, versatility, and affordability, especially for larger units.

 Protective Screens

Protecting the display screen in some public use applications is critical to ensuring a long life cycle and keeping the total cost of ownership down.  Horizon offers maximum protection through integrated glass or acrylic screens while maintaining the clarity and visibility of the display.

 Sunlight Readable
Sunlight Readable and High-Bright are industry terms used to describe some displays that are in high ambient light environments, either outdoor or indoor. Horizon offers a full line of coatings, filters, and optically bonded glass to solve the screen washout problem. Optical enhancements increase contrast, decrease glare & reflection, while improving clarity and brightness.
 Privacy Screens

Privacy Screens are integrated into monitors for viewing angle control in certain applications. Standing directly in front of the screen allows full visibility while those viewing from either side see only a blacked out screen.
